Spray Foam Insulation Built for Phoenix Heat

Spray foam does something traditional batts cannot. It expands into the gap it is sprayed into, so it seals the building at the same time as it insulates it. In a Phoenix-area home that matters, because a great deal of summer heat does not arrive through the insulation at all. It arrives through the gaps around it: top plates, can lights, plumbing penetrations, the joint where the roof deck meets the wall.

Open-Cell and Closed-Cell: How They Differ

Open-cell foam is the lighter of the two. It expands a long way, fills irregular cavities well, and is the more economical option per unit of thickness. It stays vapor permeable, which is usually what you want in an interior wall or a vented assembly. It is also a good acoustic material, so it is common in interior partitions, media rooms and shared walls.

Closed-cell foam is dense. It gives you more thermal resistance per inch, it adds real rigidity to the assembly it is bonded to, and at sufficient thickness it acts as its own vapor retarder. That density is why it is the usual choice on a roof deck, in a metal building, or anywhere the space is tight and every inch has to work.

Neither one is universally better. A two story house in north Phoenix with a vented tile roof and a warehouse off the I-17 corridor are different buildings with different problems, and specifying the same product for both is how insulation jobs go wrong.

Where Spray Foam Makes the Biggest Difference

The roof deck is usually first. Sealing at the deck rather than the attic floor brings the attic inside the conditioned envelope, which matters enormously in Phoenix because so many homes here run their air handler and ductwork through that attic. Duct losses in a punishing attic are one of the least visible and most expensive problems in a desert house.

After that: garages being converted to living space, additions and casitas, room over garage assemblies, and the rim and band areas where a lot of uncontrolled air moves. Metal buildings and shops are a category of their own, because with a steel skin the radiant gain is the whole problem and foam is bonded directly to the underside of the panel.
